Sony’s PlayStation 5 (PS5) Sales Reach 54.8 Million Units: Entering the “Latter Stage” of Its Life Cycle
Sony Corporation, the Japanese multinational technology company, reported that it has shipped 54.8 million units of PlayStation 5 (PS5) consoles worldwide. Naomi Matsuoka, Senior Vice President of Sony Interactive Entertainment, has announced that the company anticipates a decline in sales for PS5 as it enters the “latter stage” of its life cycle.
“Emphasizing Profitability and Sales”: PS5 Sales Expectations
“Looking ahead, PS5 will enter the latter stage of its life cycle,” Matsuoka shared in a recent interview. “As such, we will put more emphasis on the balance between profitability and sales. For this reason, we expect the annual sales pace of PS5 hardware will start falling from the next fiscal year.”
A Look Back: The Release and Success of PlayStation 5
The PS5 was first launched in November 2020, and sales have consistently surpassed those of the Xbox Series X|S during this generation. Sony recently introduced a new model of the console with a detachable disc drive.
Rumors and Expectations: PS5 Pro, PlayStation 6
There have been ongoing speculations regarding a PS5 Pro version, but Sony has remained quiet on any impending announcements. Microsoft has predicted the launch of PlayStation 6 as early as 2028.
“Stage” or “Half”: What Does It Mean for PS5?
It’s important to note that while Matsuoka refers to the console as entering the “latter stage” of its life, Sony’s official press release states that the PS5 is in the “latter half” of its cycle.
