My Top Games of 2023: A Year in Review
As we approach the end of 2023, I’d like to take a moment to reflect on this year’s gaming landscape and share my top picks. Despite the numerous groundbreaking reveals and disappointments, I managed to discover some truly exceptional games.
My Favorite Games of 2023
Dead Island 2: After a decade-long development cycle, Dead Island 2 finally arrived and exceeded my expectations. As a longtime fan of zombie games, I was immediately drawn to its engaging gameplay and the thrill of slicing through hordes of undead in Los Angeles.
Assassin’s Creed: Mirage: I’ve been an Assassin’s Creed fan since the first title, but this year’s Mirage was a return to form that captured my attention completely. The immersive world and strong acting made for an unforgettable experience, leading me to finally achieve 100% completion.
Escape from Tarkov: A game that consistently sits at the top of my most-played list, Escape from Tarkov saw numerous improvements in 2023. The addition of the spin-off multiplayer game, Tarkov Arena, only added to its appeal.
Redfall: Initially a disappointment due to its rocky launch, I gave Redfall another chance in November and was pleasantly surprised. The enhancements made to the game transformed it into an enjoyable experience worth sinking hours into.
Disappointing Games of 2023
Starfield: Despite the initial hype, Starfield failed to keep my interest with its flawed gameplay and story. I finished it but was ultimately left underwhelmed.
Modern Warfare 3: As a longtime Call of Duty fan, I was excited for Modern Warfare 3 but was disappointed by its short and unengaging story, as well as the frustrating SBMM and rampant cheaters.
The Day Before: Despite high expectations and following it since its early development, The Day Before proved to be a massive letdown with numerous technical issues and lackluster gameplay.
Atomic Heart: Although visually appealing in the trailers, Atomic Heart failed to live up to my expectations with its challenging difficulty curve and limited freedom.
