Sony Expects One of the Strongest Console Sales Seasons with PS5, Boosted by Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
In a recent interview with Game Informer, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) Senior Vice President and Head of Global Marketing, Eric Lempel, shared his optimistic outlook on the sales performance of the PlayStation 5 (PS5).
A Strong Season Ahead for PS5 Sales
“Our outlook on PlayStation 5 is really strong,” Lempel said. “We’re expecting one of the strongest seasons in our history in terms of console sales. It’s a combination of the great product we have and the titles that have been released since launch, most recently with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2,”
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Breaks Records
The highly anticipated sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man, which was released in late September 2023, became Sony’s fastest-selling game ever. It sold an impressive 2.5 million units within the first 24 hours of its release.
Sony’s Anticipated Sales for Q3 FY23
Earlier this year, sources close to the company revealed that Sony was expecting a massive Q3 FY23, predicting the sale of 10.5 million units. While Sony has officially stated that they anticipate selling 25 million units in FY23, it’s rumored that the initial forecast was 30.5 million.
Transition to New PlayStation 5 Model
Documents obtained by Insider Gaming and shared under the condition of confidentiality indicate that production of the older model of the PlayStation 5 (A-C chassis) ceased in September. Starting in Q4 FY23, all sold PS5 consoles will be the new model, which will simply be named the PlayStation 5 but referred to contact as the “PS5 Slim” due to its sleeker design.
Record-Breaking Sales with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
Sony experienced an unprecedented sales surge after the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 in October. The game sold 2.5 million units within its first 24 hours, marking a new record for the company.
Console Sales Projections

Record Breaking Sales in Q3 FY22 and Q3 FY23 Forecast
According to earlier reports, Sony was anticipating a massive Q3 FY23 with an estimated 10.5 million units predicted to be sold. The company officially stated that they are expected to sell 25 million units in FY23, but it is believed that the initial forecast was 30.5 million.
Cessation of Production for Old PS5 Model
Documents obtained by Insider Gaming under the condition of confidentiality reveal that production of the older model of the PlayStation 5 (A-C chassis) ceased in September. The last units of this model are expected to hit shelves by the end of the year.

Expected Increase in Sales Year-on-Year
If the predicted 10.5 million units are successful, Sony is expecting a nearly 48% increase in sales year-on-year during Q3 FY23.

Sony is set to introduce a new PlayStation 5 model, which will simply be named the “PS5 Slim” contact. This new system will feature a detachable disc drive and is expected to connect in order to expand its user base for the first time.
PS5 Sales Forecast for Q4 FY23 and Beyond
Given the strong sales performance of the PS5 since its launch, the expectation is that Sony will sell a significant number of consoles during this season.
